About the anterior hip approach
Utica Park Clinic orthopedic surgeon Chad Crawley, D.O., specializes in hip replacement surgery using a unique technique. The anterior approach allows for less pain, quicker recovery and a greater chance of successful long-term results compared to traditional techniques.
The direct anterior approach is minimally-invasive and has many advantages over traditional procedures. A small incision is made on the front of the hip to access the hip joint as opposed to a larger incision across the back or side of the hip that is used in traditional hip surgery. With this technique, Dr. Crawley can avoid cutting into the muscles and tendons to prevent the need for later repair and reduce the risk of post-surgery hip dislocation.
Benefits of the anterior hip approach include:
- Decreased risk of hip dislocation
- Improved range of motion in a shorter amount of time
- Less muscle damage
- Less pain
- Quicker recovery (return home the same day or the next day after surgery)
Conditions that can lead to hip replacement include:
- Bone tumors
- Fracture
- Injury
- Osteoarthritis
- Osteonecrosis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
The anterior approach to hip replacement has gained momentum over the last decade due to advances in technology and access to information. Dr. Crawley’s use of this technique has attracted patients from across Oklahoma and the surrounding states. No referral is required for a consultation.
Clint Cator, PA-C, who has practiced orthopedics in Tulsa since 2013, supports Dr. Crawley in assisting patients with their general orthopedic needs. For more information or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Crawley in Tulsa or McAlester, please call 918-579-2300 or click here.
