Paul Andrew Spechler, M.D., specializes in family medicine at Utica Park Clinic. His professional areas of interest include treating acute medical conditions from minor to life-threatening.
Growing up with family working in the medical field, Dr. Spechler always had a feeling he would one day follow a similar path. He had uncles who were physicians and an aunt who was a nurse. It was his grandfather though, who would be the person who encouraged him to pursue his own career in medicine.
As Dr. Spechler began his collegiate experience at the University of Delaware, he decided to join a student-run volunteer ambulance service, a decision that would help shape his career. He said, “I became an EMT and spent four years providing pre-hospital care. In EMS you have to be prepared for anything, and you must have a broad knowledge of many medical emergencies. While in medical school I enjoyed my clinical experience in every specialty and family medicine allowed me to care for a broad range of medical conditions and all ages. After my residency in family medicine, I did a fellowship in emergency medicine. This allows me to be a ‘Jack of All Trades’ in medicine.”
Now, as Dr. Spechler works to provide care as a family medicine physician, he makes it a point to connect with each of his patients. “I strive to listen to my patients and let them tell their story. I want to help them figure out what good health looks like for them and help them achieve their health goals.” He adds, “I am here to be your guide to good health. The decisions about your health are ultimately yours to make. I am here to provide you with recommendations and help with shared decision-making to reach the best outcomes for you.”
When Dr. Spechler isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, traveling, scuba diving and playing golf. “I am also a big sports fan and enjoy going to football and baseball games,” he added.
