Current Patient of ProviderSpecialty
Hannah Howard, M.D., practices dermatology. She was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by her parents, both of whom are physicians. “I saw firsthand at a young age the satisfaction that comes with a career in health care,” she says. “I knew it was a field where I could combine my love for teaching, life-long learning and personal interaction.”
Dr. Howard chose to focus on dermatology because it allows her to work with a diverse range of patients. Dermatologic conditions affect individuals of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. When treating patients, Dr. Howard acknowledges that being a good doctor is more than making the correct physical diagnosis; it is also about supporting patients emotionally and having the ability to put herself in their shoes.
Dr. Howard understands that many dermatologic diseases do not require extensive lab work or procedures to make a diagnosis. “It can be very satisfying to walk into the patient’s exam room and within seconds know their diagnosis based on visual inspection alone,” she says. “Due to the visible nature of dermatology and the fact that patients truly wear the condition on their skin, many disorders can be both aggravating and embarrassing. I find it rewarding to address the physical symptoms as well as to improve quality of life through treating dermatologic diseases.”
When teaching patients how to stay healthy, Dr. Howard reminds them that diet and exercise are not the only facets of good health. “In dermatology, there can be a clear cycle between mental health issues and skin conditions,” she says. “I regularly see how underlying stress, anxiety, or depression can exacerbate skin disorders and in turn how severe skin conditions can negatively impact mental health. It is important to remember that dermatologic disorders affect more than just the skin.”
Dr. Howard received a Bachelor of Science degree from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California in 2011. She earned a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 2015. She completed an internal medicine internship at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine in 2016. She completed a dermatology residency at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 2019.
When she is away from the office, Dr. Howard enjoys traveling, reading, spending time with friends and family, cooking and trying new restaurants in Tulsa.
