Palliative Care

Ellen King, APRN-CNP, specializes in palliative care. This specialty focuses on improving quality of life and providing relief to people who may be living with a serious illness.

Ellen’s decision to work in palliative care was influenced by her professional experience in a variety of areas from critical care to home care, education, pain management and her own personal experience with her parents. “My view of life, death and families lead me to feel fulfilled when I can assist the patient, family and health care team with clarity about priorities and peace about their decision,” she said.

Ellen became interested in a career in medicine during high school when she was taking a biology class. “Ever since then I have been amazed at the intricacies of nature and our bodies,” she said. “Nursing was a way for me to care for people at vulnerable times, to be alongside them through difficulties.”

She encourages patients to prioritize and make time for mental and physical health by setting aside time each week to rest from social media, work and other stressors. “Rest, connect and renew,” Ellen said.

When Ellen is not working, she enjoys finding new places to see, new things to do and new people to meet.

Ellen’s education includes:
     • Master of Science in nursing (MSN) with a specialty in gerontology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, 2015
     • Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, 1984

Now after years of experience, Ellen has discovered her top professional areas of interest are in geriatrics, nutrition and pain.
