About palliative care
Palliative care is a specialized medical service for people suffering from serious illness. Some examples of serious illness include cancer, heart failure, emphysema, stroke, kidney disease and dementia, to name a few. Palliative care can be provided to any person, regardless of their age or stage of serious illness. Utilizing a holistic and interdisciplinary team approach, we strive to improve the quality of life for patients and families. We help our patients by managing their complex symptoms and facilitating communication to help clarify their goals of care.
Palliative care is given alongside curative and other medical therapies, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or heart failure patients pursuing advanced therapies. Palliative care is not dependent on prognosis. Palliative care should not be confused with hospice, which is end of life care. We want to help patients live better as they pursue treatments to help them live longer. When patients and families need hospice or end of life discussions, however, our palliative care team members are experts at navigating these difficult discussions and decisions, with compassion and empathy.
Inpatient palliative care
If an inpatient palliative care consult is desired, patients or family members may speak to a member of the healthcare team, including the provider, nurse or case manager, and inquire about receiving our palliative care services.
