Warren Poag, M.D., specializes and is fellowship-trained in orthopedic hand surgery at Utica Park Clinic. Dr. Poag is double-board-certified in plastic surgery and hand surgery. His professional areas of interest include carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s contracture disease, basal thumb arthritis, trigger finger, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis syndrome, digital mucous cysts and masses/tumors of the hand and wrist.

Dr. Poag’s inspiration to pursue a career in medicine began in junior high school when he discovered his strength in science and math. He said, “I decided I wanted to use
my talents to the direct and immediate benefit of humanity. This led me straight to a desire to become a surgeon.”

Entering medical school, Dr. Poag already had his specialty of becoming a surgeon picked out. He enjoyed the immediate gratification of repairing the body and impacting someone’s life. Dr. Poag further narrowed down his specialty to just operating on hands. He added, “Hand surgery has always been a special calling to me. There is perhaps nothing more important than having hands and wrists that work well. Also, the delicacy of the surgery as well as the varied tissues with which I am required to work and the complex problems that arise guarantee a pleasantly stimulating set of problems to solve for other people.”

As Dr. Poag continues his passion to help others, he also continues to build relationships with patients to ensure a comfortable care experience. He starts by asking each patient how they use their hands in their day-to-day life. He said, “By figuring this out, I can better serve your needs to repair or improve your hands or wrists. Also, as a
byproduct, I get to know you a little better which is fun.”

Dr. Poag wants patients to know that he does not rush appointments and meets with you on your time. His advice to patients is to use your hands after surgery but of course at the appropriate healing time.

When Dr. Poag isn’t working, he can be found enjoying downhill skiing and mastering the fine art of smoking Memphis dry rub ribs and brisket.
