Mitchell Collier, M.D., specializes in family medicine at Utica Park Clinic. His professional area of interest in addition to prevention medicine is chronic disease management. He adds, “With aggressive treatments, complications from diseases like diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia can be avoided. I also like taking care of sick patients and making a point to be available when people need me.”
Dr. Collier said the decision to pursue a career in medicine was a natural one though it was difficult to choose a specialty. He said, “During the third and fourth years of medical school, students rotate through the various medical specialties to learn about the fields and to gain exposure to those careers. Unfortunately, I enjoyed them all! I was blessed to do well academically so there were no limits on my choice of specialty, and I picked family medicine as it is the only one which allowed me to do everything. As an FP, I have been able to do surgery, deliver babies and practice the full range of medicine.”
Having a good relationship with patients is a huge priority to Dr. Collier as it helps with facilitating open conversations. He said, “Communication is critical to building relationships with patients. I frequently talk with patients about their lives before getting into their medical issues. Practicing in rural Oklahoma helps with relationships too. I enjoy caring for my friends and neighbors.”
Dr. Collier’s interest in medicine came from a lifelong love of science combined with a passion for helping others. After several years of experience and joy from working in medicine, some of his go-to advice he shares is to schedule those annual health exams. He said, “I routinely recommend wellness appointments, and staying on top of screening tests is key for health maintenance.”
