Michael Garrison, APRN-CNP, DNP, specializes in critical care in the pulmonology department at Hillcrest Medical Center. His professional areas of interest include critical care, pulmonology and cardiology.
Michael’s journey into medicine began early during high school, where he said his biology teacher had a large influence in his interest. As he continued with his studies, he soon began his career as a paramedic. Michael said he has always enjoyed hands-on skills and is appreciative that he can continue to do so in the critical care setting.
With years of experience working as a bedside nurse in a critical care setting, Michael understands the worry and uncertainty that patients and families may have. To help, he makes sure to show compassion, be empathetic and listen to each patient and family member. He added, “I make sure to explain procedures, timelines and medications in detail, remembering that most of the patients and families we care for have no medical knowledge. I have also become skilled in de-escalation as a charge nurse.”
Michael’s education and career experience include:
• Doctorate of nurse practitioner (DNP) degree with a specialty in acute care at Oklahoma City University (OCU), 2023
• Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degree at Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah, OK, 2019
• Associate degree in nursing at Tulsa Community College (TCC), 2018
• Associate degree in paramedicine at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, KS, 2006
