Gastroenterology

MaryAnne Bolt, APRN-CNP, specializes in gastroenterology (GI) and speaks fluently in Swahili and Kikuyu. She believes that effective communication and empathy are key to forming strong connections with patients. “I make a point to listen actively to their concerns and questions, and I take the time to understand their medical history and needs fully,” she said.

“I chose to specialize in gastroenterology because of my interest in digestive health and the complex and challenging nature of the field, though I often feel that GI chose me. I was drawn to the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of patients suffering from digestive disorders. I was fascinated by the advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures available in the specialty,” MaryAnne said.

MaryAnne’s area of interest is providing care to those with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). “I find this specialty particularly rewarding as it allows me to make a significant impact in the lives of patients suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. I am knowledgeable in the latest advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of IBD, and I strive to stay up-to-date with the latest research and best practices in the field. I am passionate about empowering my patients with the information and support they need to manage their symptoms and maintain the highest possible quality of life,” she said.

She has always been drawn to health care and the opportunities it provides to make a difference in people’s lives. “Growing up I saw firsthand the impact that access to quality medical care can have, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of the solution,” she said.

Her favorite advice to give patients is to take an active role in their health and well-being. “I encourage them to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and physical activity, and to keep up with regular check-ups and screenings. I also stress the importance of clear and open communication with their health care team and encourage them to ask questions and voice any concerns,” she said.

When MaryAnne isn’t working, she likes to spend her free time baking. She said it allows her to be creative, experiment with new recipes and techniques and spend time with her children. “I find it to be a wonderful way for me to unwind and forget about work for a while, and I find that it helps me maintain a healthy work-life balance,” she said.

MaryAnne’s education includes:
     • Master of Science in nursing (MSN) with a specialty in family nurse practice at Maryville University, 2015
