What is neurosurgery?

Neurosurgery is the surgery of the nervous system, which primarily involves your brain, spinal cord and spinal column. The specialty also examines peripheral nerves in the body and pain in the back and neck.

Conditions treated include:

• Brain and nervous system conditions
• Brain and nervous system tumors
• Chiari Malformation - structural defects in the base of the skull and cerebellum
• Disc issues:
  • Artificial disc replacement of the cervical (neck) spine, using the Mobi-C device
  • Herniated spinal discs
• Endocrine gland conditions
• Fractures (cervical, thoracic and lumbar)
• Head injuries
• Intracranial aneurysms
• Musculoskeletal conditions
• Osteoporosis and compression fractures - treated by minimally-invasive surgery called kyphoplasty
• Peripheral nerve conditions such as carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve entrapment and peroneal nerve entrapment
• SI (Sacroiliac) joint dysfunction and fusions
• Spinal canal stenosis
• Spinal deformities, such as scoliosis
• Syringomyelia – when a fluid-filled cyst forms within the spinal cord
• Trigeminal neuralgia – extreme pain, typically in the lower face and jaw
