Isaiah Wilson, M.D., specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Utica Park Clinic. His professional areas of interest include cancer rehabilitation and communities gaining more rehab physicians. “We directly affect people’s quality of life,” he said.
Dr. Wilson has long been drawn to science and medicine. He said, “I have always been amazed by human anatomy and function. It is still fascinating what people are capable of.”
When asked why he chose rehabilitation as his focus, he said, “My mom was a special education teacher and my dad worked with marginalized and poor community groups. I grew up around these people and have always felt comfortable working with them. Finding a specialty that focused on people with disabilities felt like a perfect fit for me.”
Building relationships with patients can take time and that is something Dr. Wilson is well-aware of. He makes sure to be respectful of each person’s season of life as everyone faces their own life challenges. “Beyond that, it is about finding authentic connections and being very honest,” he added.
When it comes to giving advice to patients, Dr. Wilson said, “Life is about tradeoffs and choices. I cannot give you advice until I know what is important to you.”
Dr. Wilson said if you come in for an appointment, you won’t be rushed, you will receive a detailed physical exam and you’ll learn a bit about this line of medicine as you all work through the visit together.
Dr. Wilson’s education and career experience include:
• Residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, 2012
